Description
Every player, sooner or later, is going to have to abandon the security of the baseline for the insecurity of the net. For me, there is no greater joy in tennis than being up at the net. It’s incredibly fast; in a hard-hitting exchange at net a player has about 0.20 seconds to follow the flight of the ball, watch their opponent, react to the ball, and stroke the ball. This requires faster hand-eye coordination, quicker footwork, better balance, and for me, less thinking. With its reduced backswing and abbreviated finish, a good volley has much less technical motion than a groundstroke or a serve. Learning how to volley well will help you overcome fears about playing the net in doubles and following a short ball to the net in singles.
